A Fond Farewell to Our Friend and Co-Founder

March 13th, 2009

Melissa Swann Wagner, co-founder of the Northwest Papier Mâché Artists’ Guild and an accomplished artist in many mediums passed away last week.  We are grateful for knowing her and for her generous contributions to the guild.  Because she touched our lives in such an artful way, the effects of that connection will live on through us!  Still, she will be missed!  (I have not yet been able to find a better or more current photo of her than this one. It features our guild exhibit at Whitworth’s Kohler Gallery http://www.whitworth.edu/ many years ago.  Melissa is in the center wearing a white vest.  The reclining figure above her head is her piece titled “The Reader.”  It was purchased by and resides in the North Idaho College library with many other fine works of art you should visit if you get the chance.)North Idaho College

Creativity Thrives at Barker High School

March 2nd, 2009

Students from Central Valley’s Barker High School http://www.cvsd.org/barker went on a field trip to see “A House Divided: The Legacy of Lincoln” and “Mindful Navigation: The POA Series” art exhibits at the Chase and Kress Galleries.  I was invited to their classroom the following week to see the papier mache projects they are working on.  What a treat!  I very much enjoyed meeting these people and talking with them as they worked on their art.  I appreciate all the stories, comments and great questions they had for me.

This Art Has Been Vandalized

February 23rd, 2009
E-Equals Missing

"Mindful Navigation" - E=mc2 missing!

The following text is a copy of the sign posted at my request beside “Mindful Navigation.”  It is a statement in response to my art being vandalized at the Kress Gallery.

This Art Has Been Vandalized.
Upon entering this exhibit is a sign stating
Touching Harms the Art.
It is not true.  Touching is what makes the art.
As a fellow human being, I am touched by the world around and within me.
As an artist I attempt to interpret and extend what touches me in hope of touching others.
Others are touched by art in what experiences and perceptions they bring to it.
This respectful exchange of energy is a precious gift within a civilized society.
Touching may not harm the art, but vandalizing harms us all,
Most especially the vandalizer.
I wish deep healing for us all.
E=mc2!
Artfully,
Rhea

Happy 200th Birthday, Abe!
