Sherri Ballman – NWPMAG Member

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Eastern Washington artist Sherri Ballman loves to use papier mache to express her artistic ideas. Whether her sculptures are just for fun, or designed to make one think, she takes pleasure in the fact that she’s using materials that, if not used in her artwork, would probably end up in a landfill. These materials include old tools and broken machines, along with various kinds of papers. She blends a variety of textures and paint to make her sculptures more realistic and homogenous. Sherri enjoys transforming “junk” into beautiful works of art that will be valued for many generations.

Winsome Words and Curious Birds

Thursday, October 14th, 2010
A Cheerful selection of mixed-media hand-sculpted, sometimes slightly kinetic words chosen to evoke nostalgia, humor and appreciation for an abundant, yet seemingly diminishing collective vocabulary. Curious birds give tribute to communications that succeed beyond and in spite of words.

“Mel’s Friend” Moves to Canfield Middle School Library

Rhea Giffin visits Canfield Middle School

Canfield Middle School in Coeur d’Alene was given the Opal Brooten Purchase Award at the 43rd Annual Art on the Green Festival held on the grounds of North Idaho College.  The school’s selection committee enthusiastically chose “Mel’s Friend,” a mixed-media papier mache cairn sculpture by Rhea Giffin.  The sculpture is an homage to Mel McCuddin’s painting titled “Marker.” Go to the Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d’Alene or view link: http://theartspiritgallery.com/html/artistresults.asp?artist=4&testing=true&offset=42.  Giffin waived the amount of purchase that extended beyond the award given by Citizens’ Council for the Arts so that the school could receive the sculpture.

To show their gratitude, art teacher, Mrs. Wing invited Ms. Giffin to give an informal demonstration to Canfield’s 3-d art class students who are working on their own papier mache projects.  Spokesman-Review photographer Kathy Plonka also attended.
