“BeCause”

Rhea Giffin "BeCause"

Here is the ICARE-Faces of Hope mask/artwork I created for the 2010 benefit at the Art Spirit Gallery.

Artist’s note: I was facilitating an art project for juvenile detention students many years ago and was touched by a young boy serving time who shared a story that gave him hope. “The Impossible Flyer.”  It was based on the idea that aerodynamically, a bumble bee should not be able to defy gravity and fly, but amazingly, it does.  This recollection became the base for my inspiration.  Playing with the words Bee; Be; Be Cause.  Because this is a great Cause to Be For, I crafted a simple poem of reason and Be-ingness to affirm what I imagine is at the heart of FACES of HOPE and what families gain from the ICARE programs.  The hand is formed in the American Sign Language symbol for “I Love You.”

Because

     You are you

           Because

                I am me

                    Because

                          There exists

                                   Harmony.

E-Equals Missing

"Mindful Navigation" - E=mc2 missing!

The following text is a copy of the sign posted at my request beside “Mindful Navigation.”  It is a statement in response to my art being vandalized at the Kress Gallery.

This Art Has Been Vandalized.
Upon entering this exhibit is a sign stating
Touching Harms the Art.
It is not true.  Touching is what makes the art.
As a fellow human being, I am touched by the world around and within me.
As an artist I attempt to interpret and extend what touches me in hope of touching others.
Others are touched by art in what experiences and perceptions they bring to it.
This respectful exchange of energy is a precious gift within a civilized society.
Touching may not harm the art, but vandalizing harms us all,
Most especially the vandalizer.
I wish deep healing for us all.
E=mc2!
Artfully,
Rhea

Mindful Navigation: The POA Series

"Mindful Navigation" from The POA Series by Rhea Giffin

"Mindful Navigation" from The POA Series by Rhea Giffin

What is it?  It’s a haphazard venture into my own personal “pockets of autism” through dimensional “paintings of apples” and other playful papier mache and mixed media sculpture that loosely illustrates my poem or the other way around.  As an artist, embracing, questioning, sorting out my sensitiivities, thoughts and observations is what drives me.  For this series, Apples serve as a universally symbolic, light-hearted disguised guide for this expedition’s contemplation of complexities of thought, ironies and emotion accompanied by an occasional orange or pear.  This exhibition is in collaboration with the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture’s Art @ Work program.  Runs January 6 – March 29, 2009, 5-8 pm., Kress Gallery in River Park Square, 808 W. Main Ave., third level, Spokane, Washington, USA.  For art rental or purchase information, contact Ryanh@northwestmuseum.org A reception will be held on Friday, February 6th in conjunction with Spokane’s bi-annual Visual Arts Tour.  Hope you can attend.
